The University of Edinburgh Southern History Workshop warmly invites paper submissions for "Coming through the Fire: Change and Continuity in the American South", a one-day in-person workshop to be held at the University of Edinburgh on 6 June 2025. We invite the submission of pre-circulated papers on all aspects of the history of the American South. PGRs and ECRs are particularly encouraged to apply.
Allan Pinkerton (1819-84) was the world鈥檚 most prominent detective. He was a Chartist in Scotland, then an abolitionist once settled in Chicago. He pioneered the employment of female detectives. In 1861, he credibly claimed to have saved Lincoln from assassination. He founded Pinkerton's National Detective Agency, a precursor to America's current privatised national security state.
