Inviting colleagues toĀ consider a range of temporal, spatial, and performative aspects of aspirations,Ā we pose the following questions:
HowĀ hasĀ aspirationalĀ thinking,Ā rhetoric,Ā andĀ actionĀ evolvedĀ overĀ theĀ courseĀ ofĀ U.S.Ā history?Ā What meanings does aspirational thinking carry in the 21stĀ century and inĀ anticipation of the future?Ā WhereĀ doesĀ aspirational behavior, action,Ā or performance find fruitfulĀ ground?Ā What kinds of creative, expressive, or aesthetic forms doĀ aspirationsĀ take?Ā What do weĀ make ofĀ unfulfilled aspirations, aspirationsĀ gone astray, or destructiveĀ aspirations?Ā How do we conceptualize American Studies research,Ā teaching, and institutions by way of aspirations?
Alongside these questions, we encourage colleagues to tease out novel approaches and explorations of aspirations, framed around one or more of these thematic clusters:
InĀ particular,Ā weĀ seekĀ unexpectedĀ juxtapositionsĀ andĀ collaborationsĀ betweenĀ participantsĀ fromĀ differentĀ institutionsĀ andĀ fieldsĀ ofĀ study,Ā hopingĀ thatĀ theĀ conferenceĀ willĀ serveĀ asĀ aĀ forumĀ forĀ advancingĀ our scholarly, epistemological, and creative aspirations.
In addition to the traditional paper and panel formats, we accept workshop sessions as well as alternative format proposals that reinvent the traditional paper session.
TheĀ conferenceĀ isĀ openĀ toĀ scholarsĀ andĀ studentsĀ fromĀ allĀ countries,Ā butĀ weĀ offerĀ lowerĀ registrationĀ fees to members of NAAS (Nordic Association for American Studies), EAAS (European Association forĀ American Studies), and ASA (American Studies Association, United States).
The conference is organized by the John Morton Center for North American Studies (JMC), UniversityĀ of Turku, and the Finnish American Studies Association (FASA).
Abstract Submission: Abstracts for individual papers are max. 250 words and for panel/workshop/Ā alternative sessions max. 500 words.Ā Extended deadline: August 16, 2024.
